Puri is known as phoochka in Eastern Indian states because of the bursting sound it makes in the mouth when it is eaten. It is known as Gol Gappa in North India. The name ‘gol’ refers to the crisp sphere shape of the puri that is placed in the mouth and eaten (gappa) one at a time. It is also called as gup chup in states like Odisha, Hyderabad and South Jharkhand.
